Haridwar and Rishikesh are the “twin national heritage cities” of Uttarakhand, located just 20 km apart yet offering completely different experiences. Haridwar (“Gateway to God”) is a bustling, ancient pilgrimage site where the Ganges enters the plains, defined by intense devotion, temple bells, and the famous Kumbh Mela. Rishikesh (“Yoga Capital of the World”) is located further upstream; it is scenic, serene, and youthful, famous for its meditation ashrams, hipster cafes, and adrenaline-pumping adventure sports like white-water rafting.
Most travelers combine both into a single trip (3-4 days), experiencing the raw culture of Haridwar before retreating to the nature and peace of Rishikesh.

October to March is perfect. The weather is cool and pleasant for walking and rafting.
Note: Summers (May-June) are very hot and crowded with pilgrims. Monsoons (July-Sept) are lush but river rafting is closed.
By Train: Haridwar Junction (HW) is the major rail hub connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Rishikesh has a station (YNRK), but Haridwar has better frequency.
By Air: Fly to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun). It is just 35 km from Haridwar and 20 km from Rishikesh.
By Road: It is a smooth 5-6 hour bus or taxi ride from Delhi.
Haridwar: Har Ki Pauri (witness the mesmerizing evening Ganga Aarti), Mansa Devi Temple (take the ropeway for a view), and Bara Bazaar.
Rishikesh: Laxman Jhula & Ram Jhula (iconic suspension bridges), The Beatles Ashram (historic ruins with graffiti art), Triveni Ghat, and Neer Garh Waterfall.
Rishikesh is the adventure capital of India. You must try:
River Rafting: Navigating the Grade III & IV rapids of the Ganges.
Bungee Jumping: India’s highest fixed platform (83m).
Camping: Staying in riverside tents in Shivpuri.
Choose Haridwar if you want to be close to temples, rituals, and the main highway.
Choose Rishikesh (Tapovan area) if you want mountain views, yoga, rafting, and a relaxed traveler vibe.
