Introduction To Gangtok

Gangtok is renowned for its spiritual and cultural richness, home to around 200 monasteries, including the famous Rumtek and Enchey Monasteries where one can immerse in the serene airs of Buddhist rituals. The city is a mosaic of traditions and modern life — bustling markets like MG Marg sell local handicrafts, clothing, and traditional cuisine including momos and thukpa.
Tourists can explore several famous sites such as Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass (a border trade route near China), Baba Mandir, Banjhakri Falls, and the Himalayan Zoological Park. The area also offers opportunities for adventure, wildlife viewing, and cultural festivals like the Pang Lhabsol mask dance. Gangtok is accessible by road from nearby cities like Siliguri and Bagdogra. The closest airport is Pakyong Airport, about 35 km from Gangtok. Regular taxi and bus services connect Gangtok to these transport hubs.
Indian tourists do not require permits to enter Gangtok, but to visit restricted areas like Nathula Pass and the Tsomgo Lake region, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required, which can be obtained through tour operators.
